Beware of Public WiFi
As more and more people have wifi capable devices, and the term ‘wifi’ becomes more ubiquitous and commoditized, more and more people are apt to look for ‘Free WiFi’ when they are out and about to get internet access. However, care must be take to both know what you are connecting to, as well as what you are transmitting across the wifi. Otherwise, there could be significant implications or even worse, theft or your data, identity, or your finances.
What is WiFi Calling?
Cell phone carriers have started looking for ways to take bandwidth off their towers to improve their user’s experiences both out and about, and inside their homes. One of the technologies being implemented is WiFi Calling. This allows you to make and receive calls over the WiFI as opposed to the cell tower. Whether this is a good thing or not solely depends on your wifi connection, internet speeds and quality, carrier load at the ISP, etc. CNET has a good primer on what WiFi Calling is. If you have poor cell reception in your house, this might be a great alternative.
